Angela's Story

Angela Garcia

On November 20, 1999, Angela Garcia’s home caught fire. Terrified and caught off guard, she crawled through the dark, searching for her children but could not reach them. The blaze forced her to jump from a second-floor window. Frantically, she rushed for help, but her children died before rescuers arrived. The state wrongfully accused her and later convicted her of murdering her family.

After nearly 20 years in prison, the prosecution’s case fell apart due to faulty forensic evidence. In 2016, before a retrial could take place, Angela was offered a “dark plea.” If accepted, she would go free—but there was a catch: she would have to admit guilt and serve five more years in prison. What would you do? This is her story.
